Artist Statement
Dinke van der Zalm is an eco-artist inspired by issues in environmental science and the artistic potential of symbiotic processes. In her symbiotic approach, she combines the input of natural beings, including plants, fungi, and other intelligent organisms, with technological elements such as digital audio, artificial light, and visuals.
With her deep affinity for nature, Dinke is constantly amazed by the magic in the processes and phenomena it brings about. Amazed by all the information we can still gather by observing natural processes, Dinke's goal as an artist is to transform the collective fear for our future into trust in nature and to create work in accordance with the 'symbiocene.'
The natural world around us is the first reality we come to know and the reality in which we exist as physical beings. By strengthening our relationship with nature, we can not only foster more sympathy for our planet but also help ourselves heal and grow.
Dinke strives to involve the visitor as much as possible in the work she creates. Through interaction and attention, she creates space for the connection between humans and nature, where this connection is not only experienced in thoughts but also in the body. Using modern technology, she shapes the similarities between humans and nature and the bond that has always existed but is repeatedly forgotten.
